HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN READING NOOK
With everything that’s going on in the world, it’s easy to get frustrated with day-to-day struggles. Creating a mini escape to unwind from the working, teaching and parenting is much need in this time.
Below we have suggested some ideas to build an inexpensive reading nook or cozy cubby that can generate a tranquil atmosphere for a few minutes a day.
Quiet times helps you to slow down and generates a peaceful aura where everyone benefits.
PICKING A SPOT
Choose a cozy spot in your home. A closet or secluded corner space, and make it as minimal as possible. Even if you have to remove items, set up the nook and replace them when you’re done reading.
For children, limit only their favorite toy that always keep them company. Maybe a doll or bear and encourage them to read to them or read with other siblings. Remove any other toy so they won’t get distracted.
As for adults, surround yourself with cozy pillows or blankets and let the reading begin.
NATURAL LIGHT VS STRING LIGHTS
If you are lucky enough to get a window view, then that’s great, but it truly does not matter, once you’re able to see. Turn on a lamp or use string lights to decorate and create a soothing atmosphere.
Introduce vibrant colors for children that make them feel happy and comfortable. Create enough space so you can read with them or listen while they read.
For adults, use warm calming colors that set the mood and make you happy.
Once you’ve created your nook, it can be a brilliant way to bond with your children and even reduce screen time. If you’re alone, it’s a great way to bond with the characters in your book.
NOT FOR READING NOOKS
We all need alone time once in a while and creating a nook to just “chill” is great.
It creates a peaceful mind-set where you can recap your day and draw inspiration from your surroundings. You can use this space to write, draw or meditate and even listen to your favorite podcast.
Nooks are the ultimate escapism when you can’t leave the house. Light some candles, turn on some soothing music or grab a cup of coffee or tea and unwind.
MAKESHIFT CANOPIES AND FORTS
There are lovely canopies that are available online, but you can always create your own using chairs and blankets. Buying one that stores well is always better and saves space.
Whether you transform old crib mattresses as a comfy seat or the mini arm chair grandma gave them last Christmas, makeshift forts and canopies give you time to do your own work while children play or read. A carpeted floor is also great.
