JUST ASK!
JUST ASK! by Sonia Sotomayor is by far the most inclusive book ever written. It’s a celebration of each child’s unique difference and how by simply asking questions one can make the world a better place.
In the book, Sonia and her friends are planting a garden and just as in a garden, every flower and fruit are different, so is every child. It’s extremely hard to read this book without crying because it features children from all walks of life.
It celebrates the beauty of being different, and how being different can change how people view the world. This book is extremely important and should be in EVERY SINGLE HOME, whether you have children or not.
Apart from the vibrant, exuberant and vivid illustrations by Rafael Lopez, there are so many things to love about this book. It encourages children, and people in general, to embrace diversity and individuality.
I love that it portrayed and highlighted the strength of the children who some people might think are weak. I absolutely love that.
The reader may have expected her to highlight the differences in the children mentioned, however, their NAMES were highlighted instead because I believe someone is not defined by their disability.
What the world may see as a problem, can also be one’s strength. Someone with Autism can be great at organizing and someone with Dyslexia can be a great artist. THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF BEING DIFFERENT.
JUST ASK is the perfect book for teachers, educators and a great addition to our favorites booklist. The page transitions are absolutely flawless and it keeps the reader engaged because every single detail brings life to the characters on the page. It is extremely informative and compassionate and also encourages people to understand that if we were all the same, then we would not be able to experience and learn about different things.
Diversity makes the world interesting and fun. JUST ASK!
